Gear Box Failure on Ford Mondeo Hybrid Any Advice Please

I have a 5 year old car, 55,000 miles on clock. It's a petrol and battery hybrid. One month out of warranty (lockdown chaos) it was diagnosed with gear box failure. Ford dealership said they do not repair and £6,500 to replace. I found a company who initially claimed they could do a repair but then told me due to parts and it being a sealed unit they cannot get inside the gearbox and only option is to replace. I have to pay £5,000. I have sent a complaint to Ford who just dismissed it. I believe it could be a mechanical error as even the mechanics say they have never seen this happen on such a new car before. Does anyone know how I should proceed with my complaint to Ford? Is there anything else I can do?

  • You'll need to get an independent report stating there is a inherent fault with the gearbox.

Ford Warranty or third party ?
You would probably be relying on some goodwill from Ford, which doesn't appear to be forthcoming - Does it have a full Ford service history ?

Otherwise your starting point has to be an independent report on exactly what the fault is, and whether it is wear/tear or an inherent  manufacturing issue.

  • Thank you so much, am really upset about this situation. I bought it, when it was 2 years old, so one year warranty and then I extended by purchasing a two year extended.Yes, full service history with the dealership. The mechanics have given me a diagnosis but are worried that in a court they couldn't sat 100% manufacturing error (but admitted that it can't be wear and tear). Ford didn't initially take my complaint seriously and just shut it down - I am going to contact them again.
  • Who could do an independent report? (We have diagnosed the faults and being fully internal within the sealed gearbox unit. There are no error codes displayed on the diagnostic check in order to pinpoint the exact cause and extent of the failure.Prior to us removing and stripping the gearbox, the Ford technician assisting us checked availability of the rebuild kits required in order to put everything together again once the damaged components were replaced, but there are none available. So prior to us removing and stripping we advised that the 'best' course of action would be to replace the gearbox at this stage.)
This is what the mechanic has sent me. I have to proceed to get the car repaired as I have no other option other than scrapping it.

Just copied this from another thread, regarding CRA .

Is it a Powershift gearbox as these were not very reliable and Ford have gone back to the traditional auto boxes I think now. Have a look on the Ford Owner forums, where there will be someone who has had a similar issue.
  • Thank you so much -, I really do appreciate you taking the time...
    Yes it's power shift.

There's a reason Ford no longer fit Powershift boxes.  It could be argued you did well getting 5 years and over 50,000 miles out if it.

Gather evidence, especially from US and Australia experiences and keep on at Ford.
  • Thank you, I will. I've read about Australia...going to pester them. Even a contribution towards this hell of a cost would be better than nothing. I feel very let down and will never buy Ford again.
  • Just wondering if anyone can suggest other sites/ways to find info on Australia & US issues... as I'm researching this. Thank you
