i am going to give my grandson my old iPhone & a sim for Xmas.  I’ve kept it for him, his mum has said he can have one now.

This Lebara deal sounds great, but what happens if he runs out of credit, if he uses the plan up.  I don’t want a big bill.  I’d be happy for it to have no roaming data & no outgoing calls, or to be able to buy a top up - but not for it to come off my bank automatically.  It would need to be a separate one off transaction each time.
How do extras data or minutes work on this?

In addition to setting the monthly plan to auto renew, you can also turn auto top off on or off. If you leave it set to off it will just stop making calls/data use until you top up, or you can set an additional monthly limit from as low as £5. So you have a choice to either have it stop it working when the plan runs out, then either adding a top up manually, or automatically, or not at all. The Lebara app and web dashboard is easy to understand - not as complicated as I've made it sound! Have you looked at Voxi - my kids use it because social media and netflix, you tube etc don't count towards the data usage

I think he’ll mostly use it indoors, so on WiFi.  I don’t anticipate him running out, but I don’t want big bills!  Or any excess bills.

He'll only run out once, then he'll learn to curb his use
Voxi as suggested is good for social media, but more than you are spending
I'm with Lebara and no troubles at all

    No he won’t.........
But so long as it doesn’t auto top up from my bank that’s fine.
  • Hello, Be very careful about any Lebara deals suggested by MSE. I followed the 'MSE blagged Lebara deal' and it ended up costing me because Lebara know nothing of the deal!
If you follow the link on the MSE email or from the MSE website it shows the deal on a Lebara webpage but you actually get the most expensive PAYG Lebara option and not the plan you think you are applying for. Be vary careful when following MSE links. They don't work and MSE don't appear to be doing anything about this problem.

But you didn't Zimmi, you used Honey, not the MSE link and it didn't work out for you.
MSE can't do anything and there isn't a problem if it's done correctly.

Hi, I have similar requirement for my Mother, and need some clarification.

Historically my Mum's accidently chewed through mobile data on her iPhone (possibly background data) - Luckily no huge bill due to a spend cap, and hopefully nipped in the bud now.

Lebara claim "No bill shocks" and, SIM only plans are capped at £0 for out of bundle costs. Does this rely on auto-top up being switched off, or is it a genuine spend cap, like on other networks?

The comment above, about auto top-up limits as low as £5 has thrown me a bit.

We'd like the convenience of not having to top up, having the tariff renew monthly whilst having a £0 spend cap for out of bundle charges. (As with other monthly SIM only plans).

Finally, in their promotional T&C's the mention that referrals discounts, like 50% discount on tariffs, will be removed if auto top-up is switched off. Again this is another reason why I'm interested in how Auto top-up works. We obviously don't lose the 50% referral discount.

We like our cake, and eating it. Seems that 50% off is now only available through referral. Whereas previously uSwitch and others offered this.

    Advice appreciated.
