Hi. Hermes will come and they will give you a receipt. Then the responsibility is theirs. You can have them collect it from your home during coronavirus, you don't have to take it anywhere.  And all with social distancing, of  course.

I have done a few returns like this - not wrong items, just unsuitables.  It honestly is NOT a problem. In fact, we now know our Hermes delivery driver very well, know her name and she's lovely.

There is no need to worry. Once you have that Hermes receipt in your hand, your involvement is over.  And thanks for being honest in the first place. Well, you got there in the end.
Before saying there is no need to worry, have you ascertained that Hermes will carry a computer and that it will be adequately insured?  Looking at their website Hermes will NOT compensate for a laptop. carry-guide.pdf
If Amazon is arranging the return is it the OP's concern?

In view of the value of the item, and the problems being experienced by others posted here about wrong items being received and returned, then I would most definitely be insisting that it is collected by Amazon Logistics - the driver's signature being obtained and, if possible, recorded on the OP's phone of the driver physically carrying it to the van.
  • can anyone confirm whether amazon has its own logistics that can collect? Is it worth me going back on the chat and saying I am really not comfortable with hermes collecting it, and insisting that an amazon driver collects it directly from me?

The Amazon delivery drivers are self employed I don't think they can take returns . When there deliveries are finished they go home with the van not back to the hub. I know 2 drivers and they don't go back to the hub when finished
I had a return took it to a local shop which had Hermes self print , scanned the qr code label came out put this on parcel and the machine gave me a receipt Amazon refunded shortly after.
  • Get back on to Amazon to confirm the returns process they wish you to follow. Make it clear that it is a computer and that their proposed returns provider (Hermes) do not compensate in the case of computers. Make sure this is in writing (e.g. online chat and you save a copy of the transcript, or email). If they still insist then take reasonable precautions as already suggested and get a receipt for the drop-off.

Note: If the courier is engaged by Amazon (i.e. they define the courier and pay for it) then the goods become their liability once they are in the hands of their courier.
  • But Amazon will just send it back, whoever the courier is, when they realise it's a computer and not the recycling bin they sent!

    :)  :)  :)

not sent it back yet (not had time) however I think its well worth going back on amazon chat and explaining to this them... and perhaps even state what you said about them not compensating... explain that once I hand the product over to the courier that it becomes Amazons liability... and ask the rep if they are happy for me to continue with the return process under this condition.

I'm sure they'll say yes (which I will take lots of screen shots of the conversation and request a transcript)... if they happen to refuse liability then I will refuse to return and come back here for advice.
  • If they're making you go out your way to return it, I'd be asking them for reimbursement for fuel and time. It isn't your fault, so you shouldn't be left out of pocket.
Even with someone collecting, I'd be tempted to chance asking for a gesture of goodwill, as this sounds time consuming.

Went back on the chat this morning and I have it in writing from a rep that amazon accepts full responsibility for the return...that's good news and puts my mind at ease.

Minicooper, you do have a good point there through... I have to repack it... go out to the next town over (during a pandemic!).. that in itself is a hour of my time + fuel... and add to that the time it's taken on amazon chats to sort it out.. I don't think it's unfair to ask for something... perhaps they'll give me a free prime month at the least?

Anyone got any suggestions on how to word a request for this?

  • But according to the other similar threads on here, Amazon won't accept that they have sent you the wrong item, because that isn't possible, and will want you to return what they did send you, which of course is a recycling bin and not a computer.   Why not keep the bin?

(I am of course joking.  I think... )
I wonder where all the cynics on here are now saying this kind of thing just doesn't happen?
Amazon delivered a gold bar to me by mistake. Can I keep it? True story as it's posted on MSE.
