The mirrors come to mind as something that could be worth a bit. And something the seller could claim were antiques worth hundreds of pounds and if the mirror's in the bottom of a landfill you can't prove them wrong.

They have to provide evidence it was worth hundreds (and that they took reasonable action to mitigate their losses). Can't just say it was a valuable antique. Imagine going to small claims and trying to convince everyone that some unseen mirror, that you willingly abandoned, is worth £500? I can't see it working myself.
But  you raise a good point that some people are stupid enough to think this would work. So take pics of the abandoned stuff to clearly show its condition, give the seller a 'reasonable' time to collect it (via solicitors), and then chuck/sell it.

  • When we got rid of our trampoline we put it out front and the scrap man took it.
My aunt and uncle bought a house and  weren't moving in for a month. The sellers left a garage full of tools.
My uncle went over one day and found the recessed doormat had gone, looked in the garage and so had some of the tools.
It turned out the buyers thought they could nip in and move more stuff as no one was living in it!!!!
