Vender left rubbish in our house?

Just got the keys(!) for our new house, but the vender has left some rubbish lying around. A broken trampoline in the garden, rusty garden tools and broken flowerpots, and 2 mirrors on the walls (not disguising huge holes, thankfully!). Am I right in thinking I can just take this stuff to the tip, and be disgruntled about it? Or do I have to give them chance to come and remove their stuff first?

    You should ask I guess, but if it's junk I would not bother.

    You technically could force them to remove it (unless they said they would be leaving it!), but again it would probably cost more than you would gain.
  • We had this problem when we moved 10 years ago. The loft of the house was full (and I do mean full! ) of rubbish and junk. Obviously it wasn’t the first place we checked when we moved in as access was difficult, so a month had elapsed before we knew. 
    There was some back and forth between us and the vendors EA and in the end we just made several tip runs. It’s a pretty awful thing to do but cleaning it ourselves was the easiest thing to do.

    Stricly speaking it belongs to them (if not in the F&F list) and you have a legal duty of care and should give them the opportunity to collect.
    In practice, given the negligible value...... tip.
    I wonder if the OP knows where they moved to . . . they could then return the items to their front garden ;)

    if they left the items behind then they don't want it and hope you will want it or will be kind enough to dispose of it for them.  you could ask the estate agent to tell them to come and collect the stuff, especially the broken trampoline, if you don't fancy taking it down the tip yourself.

    Thanks all! Not sure where the vender moved to, unfortunately.

    It’s a shame, because they were so amenable during our viewings, and for our survey, and we were all keen to get the sale pushed through quickly and so all helped each other out a lot. Didn’t expect a bloody great trampoline still in the garden, and the odd bits of furnishings and rubbish left inside tarnished that first feeling of it being ‘ours’. Small potatoes, I suppose - although we haven’t looked in the eaves storage yet! 😬

     When our DD moved into her flat, the vendor left a damaged bed in her bedroom along with a broken bin in the kitchen. They also took the washing machine that was listed on the F&F as staying.
    The washing machine being taken wasn’t a problem as our DD had one already but we dumped the bin and called the vendor who sent a parent to collect the broken bed once it had been put outside.

    People are often very nice...when they want something.
  • When I moved into my current house the seller’s has left loads of rubbish in the garden and had let the grass grow to 3ft in one area. Not helpful advice but I just got rid of it myself, less hassle. 
    Interesting re the mirrors, I have 3 mirrors fixed to walls in my house, I was planning on leave them when I move rather than removing them and trying to make the walls good...

    If that’s what you want to do, then just make it clear to your buyer, I suppose! In our case, one mirror is bloody huge and hung on a wall downstairs. It’s nice, but not what we would want, or in a place we would want to put it. The second mirror is leaning against a wall on the landing, where it was during all of our viewings, but somehow not removed once the house was sold?

    Our vendors moved into rented to get the sale through quickly. Can only assume they didn’t have space for the mirrors, and couldn’t be bothered coming back to dump the trampoline. Again, a shame, because the vendor did stress that said trampoline would be removed, when we last saw the house for the survey. Hey ho.
