Boiler needs servicing or replacing.

Options
We have a Baxi solo 3 pfl 40 which we have had for around 20 years and is now playing up . The boiler works and fires up on the fused switch near the timer switch but doesn’t work on the timer switch , so we get hot water and C/H at the same time , we cannot have one without the other so be the 2 port valves (maybe) on l think a S Plan.
We have 7 radiators in our 3 bedroom , 1 bathroom house and the radiators have been in around 30 years  , so is it worth getting repairs and servicing the boiler with new radiators ( how much could this cost be) , or going for a combi boiler and 7 new radiators where they would have to take the old hot water tank out and fit some new copper pipes.
How much do you think a new combi boiler and 7 radiators would cost.
Should l get 3 quotes if going for a new system , where is best to look on line for quotes or who would you suggest/recommend to carry this work out at a lowest cost.
Is green deal available, could l get help with this , a couple with a child .

  • If it's not been serviced in a while, I would start there rather than ripping out your boiler and all your radiators.

Usual cause of both CH and DHW at same time will be the valve. They tend to stick after a summer not doing much. Mine does it if I forget to run the heating occasionally (monthly) over the summer. A good clonk with a hefty screwdriver handles always fixes it. Not sure what you mean about the timer not working unless you mean is it to blame for not separately running the DHW or CH.

The Solo is not a condensing boiler, so installing a new boiler could save money if the radiators are large enough to allow it to operate with the water below 50 degrees C. If the problem with the existing boiler is just that the timer is broken, you can get this fixed for less than £200. The Solo boiler will be reaching the end of it's natural life - it might make it to 25 years with luck, but if you have had other problems with it, replacement could make sense.

Expect to pay c£3000 for a new combi boiler, and another £1000 for new radiators. You don't need new radiators unless you are concerned that they are corroded, or they are not large enough to allow the boiler to operate in condensing mode, but if you retain them, you will need to have the existing radiators flushed.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.
  • Had a quote to change our conventional boiler with hot water tank to a combi boiler .
New 30kw valiant eco boiler , smart thermostat and flush the system (is this all needed ) as l don’t want to find out l have to pay for additional things if/when l go ahead with this .
quote is £2,850 is this a good or reasonable price the this boiler and to change the system over.
Is it too much , could l get it cheaper .
who would you recommend for combi quotes if this is
