I always wonder about those people who have lovely shiny kitchen floors and low level lighting at plinth level.

i find it is fine on laminate. just wring the mop a bit before you take it out of the bucket.swingaloo2 said:
I use a mop and flash cleaner for the tiled floors but was told not to use a mop on the laminate as it should never be wet as it seeps into the joints.AskAsk said:mop, bucket and flash floor cleaner for both laminate and tiled floors.0 -
Two adults and a cat in my home.
Did the proper clean before moving in, over a couple of days.
I took up my lounge carpet a few months after moving as there was some nice laminate / engineered wood under it. Gave it a sweep, went over it with a damp cloth a few times (made a weak mix of either supermarket non-bio or the eco stuff washing liquid). Can't say it needs much more than a sweep, with occasional damp cloth wipe over since.
I'm also a shoes off when I get through the door household (light carpets everywhere else). Barely notice any cat fur, compared to running a vacuum over the carpets.
The kitchen floor tiles are an absolute PITA as they are mosaic style, with fake sunk grouting. I'm undecided about grouting them so it's level with the tiles or smashing them off and getting some cheap lino until I replace the kitchen. That floor is my OH's task, he has purchased a special brush which attaches to the drill.
This flat seems a lot less effort to clean, possibly due to having concrete floors, but I'm on a main road, have the windows open a lot and spent summer in and out the garden.
Is it possible, whatever you are cleaning the floors with are somehow causing the dust to stick in clumps, rather than tiny near invisible bits?Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.0 -
The low level lighting is there to guide you to the doors in the event of a fire (think - Aircraft emergency lighting). With a smoke filled kitchen, dust on the floor is the least of your worries.Slinky said: I always wonder about those people who have lovely shiny kitchen floors and low level lighting at plinth level.
Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

It's not, it's principally decorative.FreeBear said:

Ours is certainly not emergency lighting, it is most definitely decorative!!FreeBear said:

And yes it does show up any dust on the floor

I don't claim to be an expert in floor-level emergency lighting in kitchens, but I suspect FreeBear might have been being tongue-in-cheek.

We have recently got wood floor instead of carpet downstairs, and the rest is vinyl tile. We have bought a robotic hoover and I’m amazing at how much dust it gets (including under sofas). We have run it for a bit each day and it’s been great at picking up grit, dust and crumbs. To clean the floors I’ll use the damp microfibre mop on the wood; and use a wet cloth on the tiles.0

I can't sleep. I didn't get a chance to clean the floor yesterday and this thread has made me want to get up and do it. I understand your frustration, OP. We've just moved and it's everywhere too. Every time I look, there's more. The rest of the house probably won't appreciate the hoover on at this time. 😬Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
