Money Moral Dilemma: Should I sell my new PlayStation 5?

This is one Money Moral Dilemma where there’s no moral dilemma involved at all. You bought an item which you’ve now decided you don’t want/need, so you’re considering selling it on eBay. Assuming you intend to abide by eBay’s terms and conditions, it will ultimately be a straightforward sale and purchase - you have no need of the item, but prospective buyers are keen to get their hands on one, from what you say (I’ve no interest at all in PlayStations, so know very little about them). Whoever ends up buying it will obviously be prepared to pay the going market rate.
Note I used the word market there, because that’s what we’re living in - a free market economy (like it or not). When a pension fund buys shares in a listed company, they do so in the hope that the share price will increase in the future, so that when they come to sell the shares they make a profit on the sale (which goes towards paying the pensions). They don’t think, “Well, we only bought them at £X so to be fair to the new buyer we’ll only sell them at £X, even though they’re prepared to pay more,” do they?
But if you’re so troubled morally about putting it on eBay, just give any profit you make on it to a charity of your choice - you won’t have lost any money, and your conscience will be eased.0 -
Market forces my dear. If people are stupid enough to pay over the odds for an addiction then let them. Enjoy any extra money you make.1

People sell houses at the highest price they can get.
I see very little difference.
Sell and make a profit I'd say.
Wish I'd have thought about doing the same.

Sell it, thats what I did. Really wanted the disc version but couldn't pre order it so went for the digital version. Later down the line managed to pre order the disc version. Kept the digital version and resold, put the money to the disc version.
People sell houses and cars for as much as possible, remember it is only a games console, people were buying up baby food and nappies at the beginning of the pandemic to resell and no one bat an eye lid, yet somehow people get up in arms over a luxury not a necessity.
you didnt buy it to resell at first. I understand the issue with scalpers that buy hundreds of the consoles to resell however you are one person, who has changed their mind, sell up and enjoy the profit.
As a sidenote, if someone collects in person on ebay, there is a code you can scan in the app, that the customer has, and it proves that you both met and they picked up the item. Will help incase of any disputes2 -

My advice would be to sell it to a friend for the price you paid.
Then you're not going to feel bad about profiteering, and the friend who is DESPERATE for it will be delighted as all shops are sold out.
And if you have no friends, please DM me as my son is currently going to be disappointed this Christmas!1 -
If you do put it on eBay, put it on as an auction with a reserve price of what you paid for it? That way you'll definitely make your money back but it's up to the buyer how much they spend0

Sell it on ebay , for what you paid if you wish. A few years ago i got four oasis tickets for my children, but on a date they couldn't go so it was my first sale
on ebay, loathing ticket touts i priced it at face value ,as i had paid, god the email machine was hot that night!1 -
If you return it or sell it at face value, the odds are that the person buying it, will whack it on eBay and profit from your niceness. When the PS4 came out, I ended up with 2 as I had pre ordered one and then when they came out I managed to buy one as a bundle with 4 games.I just put it on eBay with a £1 starting price, and let people bid on it. I didn’t feel guilty as I didn’t ask for silly money, it was what people were prepared to pay.I will buy it off you if your selling it and I wouldn’t put it on eBay. I am not to fussed to wait, hence why I haven’t bought one.Debt free. March 2020
Mortgage free-August 2021
Planned retirement date- 19/5/2026
£29500 saved. Target £420000(19/05/2026)0 -
No dilemma here at all, I think. If somebody buys it from you for "x" because they want it now rather than have to wait for it, you have done them a service. If they are prepared to buy it for "x" then it is worth it to them, and they want it. Nobody will be forced to buy it from you.0
