Check you have insurance for contamination caused by leaks or split tank.1

comeandgo said:Check you have insurance for contamination caused by leaks or split tank.and theft......Disagree with a couple of previous posts:* My tankis 2500. Requires filling about once a year, though a big tank gives me the option to top up if prices dip.* I use boilerjuice as my first price check for comparson, but it is never the cheapest round here. But then no one is always cheapest, so always shop around. Many suppliers now have online price checkers, as do the bigger group-buy clubs (Oil-club and theheatingoilclub).* never sign up to a monthly automatic top up scheme. What you are doing is signing up to high prices.* it's normal with property sales (and tenancies) for an estimate to be made of the tank contents, and use the last price paid to adjust the sale price. Tenancies do similar comparing contents at start/end of tenancy and adjusting price accordingly.

Good tip about the insurance for a leak, I had to claim on my insurance, luckily didn't have to have the platform excavated as it wasn't near a water source.
If you find a hole in your tank a temporary solution is to block it with a bar of wet soap, it works well.£216 saved 24 October 20142 -
If you have plenty, now is the worst time of year to fill it. Our tank was big enough for a whole year (2500L) and I usually found the best time of year to fill it was about August. Keep an eye on the price charts at BoilerJuice.com and pick the best time to order a refill. then phone all your local suppliers and see who is cheapest, you don't need to show loyalty and you might get your oil from a different place each time.It will almost certainly be standard Kerosene.2

I like having my heating fuel paid in advance, so no real surprise bills.
We had our tank replaced earlier this year, went with a steel tank as it was quite a bit cheaper. It came with a fuel gauge on the tank so we've got rid of the watchman.1 -
I would also invest in good lock and an alarm! If you are in a rural area it is only a matter of time before some one will try and nick your oil!1

We barely get through 1000ltrs a year so tend not to top up too often. Its surprising how many locals shun boiler Juice as they like to go direct, we always get it quicker than direct are offering tooMake £2023 in 2023 (#36) £3479.30/£2023
Make £2024 in 2024...1 -

If you are in a rural area it is only a matter of time before some one will try and nick your oil! That was certainly true when prices were around 45 - 55 ppl a year or so back.I believe thefts have dropped off dramatically now that price is around 25 ppl!And trouble with locking the tank is that once a thief has decided to target your tank, he'll come equipped. Either snap off the lock in seconds, or worse, drill a hole in the tank, take what he can syphon off, then leave a bloody great mess of leaking oil to clear up as well as a damaged tank to replace......Best defense is to have the tank as far from the road as possible, and out of sight.
