Couldn't reach Virgin Media customer services to give cancellation notice

Hi all,
My contract ends on 18th of December, so I rang Virgin on 17th November to give notice of leaving (and to trigger their retention callback for a better offer, hopefully). I was in the queue for about an hour, so I stopped. Tried again on the 19th November, again waited about 45 minutes before giving up. Finally got them today after about half an hour of waiting, where I was able to tell them to disconnect me.
Virgin have then said "I should have given them notice in time", which is cheeky, considering I couldn't reach them. Anyway, instead of getting a disconnection day on the 18/12, when my contract ends, my disconnection day is now 22/12. Are they gonna charge me some ridiculous tariff for those few extra days now?
In addition, how long to they normally wait with their retention call back? There are some good offers going now from other ISPs, so wouldn't really want to miss out on them whilst waiting for Virgin callback.

Thanks everyone!

Your contract with them might say what happens after your contract ends. Have you checked?
I don't see how you can argue that you shouldn't pay something as you were late cancelling. You could have called on 16th or 18th November or anytime before then.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

You didn't have to wait to the very last minute to cancel, you just had to give them notice.

OP didn't: he tried to call them 31 days before end of minimum term.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

From experience the notice begins 30 days from when you tell them, you can't ring them in advance and give 35 days notice! I'd imagine it's just setup to make it difficult to cancel so people forget
