New contract best deal technique query
I’ve always waiting for my contract to expire to allow me to play mobile phone companies against each other in order to get the best deal on the latest mobile phone, usually an iPhone. This is rather than taking any upgrade “deal” mid contract. Main aim is to get the best possible monthly deal over a 24 month period.
I usually play the loyalty card with the retentions team and explain I get a x amount of discount with their biggest rival in the hope that they match and call me back with the same if not better deal. Normally I ask for my PAC code in the last 30 days.
With fees about to increase I may need to act before the last 30 days of my contract ending this time round. Does anyone else have any advice or technique they use to get the best deal?

Surely the best deal is not to purchase a new phone, especially on a 2 year finance package? 2 years is a long time in the mobile phone world...Do you really need the latest mobile phone? The networks love customers who must have the latest and greatest. Hit them in their pockets by going SIM only and look elsewhere for a phone, but only if yours is broken. Given that iPhones are heading towards £1000 a pop, do you really need to spend that amount of money to watch cat videos?3

In terms of the best deal there’s no doubt it’s not the smartest thing to do. However I do like to treat myself to the latest tech when it comes to the mobile phone and hoped that there are people in MSE that share this viewpoint whilst still look to get the absolute best deal as possible.0

Keep checking the Hotukdeals website for deals, especially in the run up to Black Friday.

The latest phone is important to the OP, which is a personal choice.
It is still worth considering buying the phone and SIM-only deals. If you don't find a good solution that way, at least you looked.
For any further advice, some indication of how much calls / data / texts you require, current network, current £monthly and target £monthly will aid assessments and guide more specific suggestions.1 -

My current phone is iPhone XS 256Gb. O2 Contract has ended and I have recently moved to a 25gb data, ul mins and texts for £27 a month sim only deal again with O2, which is monthly rolling allowing me to leave at anytime. I had a Giffgaff deal at the end of previous phone deal but didn’t like that I couldn’t enter a competition of phone certain numbers.
Looking for an iPhone 12 Pro or iPhone 12 Pro max with min 256gb, ul mins and text and min of 15gb data over a 24 month period and hoping to pay around £45 per month with a fairly meaty up front fee.
Partner has iPhone XR 64gb, 4gb data ul phone & texts on Vodafone contract which ends 1st Jan 2021.
Partner is keen to move to iPhone 11 Pro with 6gb data or more. Hoping for around £45 per month with upfront fee.
