My Scottish Power cover runs out in a few weeks and renewal is £63 more than new customer price. My boiler is 12 yo and so that limits where I could switch to as SP accept boilers up to 15yo. So I wondered when can I take out a new customer policy- the next day when a few hours have elapsed? I know I wouldn't be covered for 1st 28 days but it's probably a risk worth taking to save money specially if I go through a cashback site.

Ring them and negotiate to the new customer price. The renewal rack rate is just a punt, no-one needs to pay it.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • I have Brit. Gas cover, yes I know!15 years old boiler.
My renewal was about £30/annum more. Phoned up the thinking of cancelling number. Not much negotiating needed, £21/annum less to renew.
As macman suggests, give them a call, there's often a thinking of leaving option. Depending how desperate they are you could be pleasantly surprised.

My boiler is 40 years old and i dont have any cover :)
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Once anything is out of warranty without a breakdown the odds are it will be alright for a very long time.  Find a local friendly boilerman & get it serviced.  Find one who lives nearby & he will probably do it on his way to or from a big job.  Save yourself a fortune.  Work it out - how much have you paid over say 10 years, deduct what an annual service would be.  That is probably more than enough to buy a new boiler.

My Baxi LPG back boiler is 38 years old.  Luckily we have a RGI in the village who comes and services it each year (£45).  If it ever did go wrong, I know he'd be round the same day to sort it!

In the 38 years its needed one new gas valve (£40) and a pilot light FFD (£9).  It may only be 65% efficient, but I can live with that for the super reliability.

What a shower Scottish Power /Domestic and General are. I phoned them to negotiate my new terms and they said my contract doesn't run out til July 2021 because I had "extended" it in a phone call last July. I said that wasn't true, I've only ever phoned them to arrange my annual service and I have a document from them saying my 12 month contract runs out in 2 weeks. They told me I was mistaken! I'm off elsewhere likely 24/7 for a year and cancelled DD as they're obviously in chaos and I wouldn't trust them to stop it themselves

If only I could. getting a tradesman for anything is futile where I live in a rural area. I've been trying to get my gutter and fascia replaced for over a year, ppl promise to come and give me a quote and never do.

Do you mean 24|7 Home Rescue?
Not everyone is thrilled with them.

Yes them! Happy to give them a chance, same price as my last contract with SP and it's a 30 day rolling contract
