Parcel lost: DPD / or pick up store

Hi,
I arranged for a return shipping service through DPD on Wednesday (20th Nov) via the mobile app and dropped it off at my local dpd parcel shop.
The trouble now is I can't track the parcel on the app and DPD doesn't where it is either.
The app is still showing 'Awaiting parcel receipt' with a QR code, It's been saying the same thing ever since I purchased the shipping service.
Who is liable for my missing parcel, the shop or DPD? The shop insist dpd picked up the parcel and DPD are saying they can't track it but will launch an investigation ( not getting my hopes up) to try and track it down.
When I dropped the parcel off the shop keeper gave me a slip with a dpd reference number on it and the barcode which was on the same slip was stuck on the box and then scanned.
It just seems bizzare that no label was emailed to me when I arranged for the shipping service through the app it just said, I don't need to print any labels or nothing and just take it to the parcel shop.
What's frustrating is that it took me a while to get the return info from an online shop after going through paypal dispute centre and the seller has given me 14 days to return it for a refund, value of goods was for £638. You can read the thread here : https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/77797580#Comment_77797580
Now that the parcel is lost what happens if DPD finds the parcel and delivers it back to me after 14 days, in which case I'll be £638 down as I didn't return the goods back in time, can I go after DPD?
One saving grace is that I took out insurance to the value of £500, so will be £130 down :-( that is if DPD doesn't start playing hardball and starts saying that they have no proof they collected the item as it hasn't been tracked through the network.
Not sure what to do now, shall i report it as theft to the police?

DPD are responsible, but the difficulty is proving you dropped it off. If you can prove that, the shop potentially losing it is between them and DPD.I wouldn't expect any help or lenience from the retailer if you went in with a PayPal dispute, now it's in their hands they'll probably have their backs up and will still religiously to the outcome (no refund as out of time).0

DPD are liable. They don't pay out consequential cost though.1 -

DPD will just tell you it's not been dropped off, which is exactly as the tracking says.1 -
Thankyou for your response! I have been into the store and they said they did scan it (I watched her scan it when I dropped it off) and she scanned it on the way out when dpd collected it she said. Is there anything I can do? She says she has this issue with them all the time so its an issue on their side with the scanning? Great! Any idea what will happen with my parcel now then is there a chance it could be delivered?0

Hi Kaite,
Apologies for the delayed response.
I emailed DPD claims department and copied in the CEO giving them effectivelty 14 days to resolve my complaint before filing the claim at a small claims court. They did finally come back to me and refunded me £500 as I took additonal insurance when I paid for postage.
Did you take out additional postage and was you given a receipt from the shop keeper when you handed the parcel in?Save Save Save:o

Its ok! Unfortunately I didnt take out insurance! I could kick myself. And yes I was handed a receipt.. interestingly the tracking has changed now to say I dropped my parcel off at the DPD pick up shop but they are still unable to locate it! They are currently doing a depot search but its been 7 days since I dropped it off I dont hold much hope!
