 Gas usage after small leak. Am i being doubtful. I have always been careful with my bills and take readings at least monthly when was possible prior to smart meter install, had i have not known that was not as easy, would never have agreed. At our last Gas safety check a small leak was found and fixed. Our house is rented so gas safety checks are carried out every 10 months. We and neither the gas safety people could smell the gas leak. Yet my gas readings are very bad, in my notebook it shows i had 821 on 3/3/20 at 3.44pm, they asked for readings in May husband has photos i never wrote it down but it was around 900 something, so this morning it is 12370. That does not seem like a small gas leak to me, seems more than i have used in a lifetime. I am amazed we are all alive and ours and neighbors houses are still standing.

I forbid anyone anyone using gas/ washing hands to ensured its fixed, so i could check currant usage. Switched heating on planned for an hour but gave up after 14 mins due gas meter showed 6 more units used, is this normal or is just me being paranoid.

A photo showing the meter and the reading would be good.

Just checking  - you know there's a decimal point on most meters don't you ?  Could it be 1237 ? 

You say it's a Smart - what readings are on the monthly bills?

Yes with decimal its or was first reading this morning as 12370.43, still working out how to upload a photo.

I’d very very much doubt that you have a gas escape that bad. 

You’d have had a smell of it by now.

Wrong units.  When you read the meter you give the cubic metres (m3) readings, not kWh.  6kWh costs less than 15p; using 30 or 40kWh per day is perfectly normal.

Time to send them the correct reading !

I am a low gas unit user due to financial restraints, i do not understand meter readings which is why i am asking but from fitting in Feb 2019 to may 2020, Meter only went from 0 to 900, whereas now it has gone from 900 to 12370 in 6 months and summer months at that seems odd to me with only a small gas leak that could not be smelled. All i know is the gas meter gained another 6 units added once heating was switched on for 14 mins.

12370 is not your meter reading, it's the total kWh used which is roughly 11 times the m3 reading which you should be submitting. You need to press the right button to see the actual reading.

You need to get the meter to display m3 rather than kWh, otherwise your gas usage will be 11 times what it should be ! 

Here's a video that shows how to do it.

The correct reading should now be about 1100m3.

Assuming the meter was installed on 20 Feb 2019, it's taken you 21 months to clock up the average annual consumption, so you're certainly not using too much gas !
