EDF energy can’t find my meter & been charging me for a different meter

Advice needed as I discovered that the meter on my recent bill wasn’t the same number as the serial number on the meter in my house which came about as I got a high bill for £42000 going back to Jan 2019 and I have always paid DD £100. The bill was crazy as especially this year my 2 bedroom flat has been locked up with only 2 weeks stay in January 2020. EDF now claim it’s called a meter mix up and as i had been providing regular meter readings up to jan 2019 the billed amount is fine even though the meter the billed me for is not registered to me.
They say it happens and will just register the meter over and the meter readings will be assigned to the new number.
I’m not sure how to proceed with this and also in comparison with neighbors who have a flat that they live in, there electrical bills are much lower than mine.

As you've been supplying regular readings you should be able to calculate your bill. If these readings are on the bills - even against the wrong meter - it should be straight forward.
It is not good practise to compare yourself with others - you may have a different lifestyle, like your heating at different temperatures for different times.
PS You've actually posted on the wrong part of the thread - you're not the first and won't be the last - it's a bad design that MSE won't correct.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
Have you verified that the meter you are reading is really the one that is supplying you? Meters external to flats often get mixed up.0

One thing you need to know is which meter really supplies your flat. Do not assume that anything they are telling you is true. You can't work out the correct way forward until you know that. Then, if you think they have got it wrong, make a formal complaint. Don't just discuss the matter with their customer support people - the complaint is essential. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.1
