Personal data being sold

Hi everyone
Looking for opinions really, and posted here for best fit.
These past couple of days I am randomly being inundated with letters about home insurance from busiensses like Direct Line and Churchill.
I certainly don't own my home, but I'm also curious how they've obtained my data in the first place. Of course I'm registered to vote, but selected the option to be opted out of having personal details shared. I also search for my information so that I can remove it from directories.
This tells me that maybe another business has sold my info?
Can some savvier than me confirm whether I can enquire where these businesses obtained my info, and whether I can track where this has happened?
Thanks
Sorry if this topic is boring!

Multiple places you have your information online .Phone Book ,Electoral Register .(This tells me that maybe another business has sold my info)Yes probable how many businesses have you dealt with in the last ten years .You could ask each and everyone if they have sold on your details or did you tick a box allowing them to do that .(insurance from busiensses like Direct Line and Churchill. )Same company , have you looked up any insurance quotes in the last few years .

Slightly off topic, but just because you don't own the place doesn't stop you getting contents insurance.1

Welcome to the 21st century. Data is a huge commodity and it is being traded whether or not you like it. All those check boxes that you ticked, or forgot to tick, may have allowed a company to share your information with 'selected third parties'.I don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!2

I'm betting on car insurance. I'm sure that is who sold mine on.

If you want to try to trace such things you could try using extended email addresses (or aliases) if your email provider supports them.I don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!2 -
