Leak when using shower - through walls?

Bit of a strange one this. New bathroom fitted 6 months ago. There is an over bath shower that is fed from the bath taps, so no hidden pipe work to the shower. There is a leak to the room below when the shower is used. The bath has been resealed twice and the pipework under the bath checked. Only leaking when the shower is used not the bath.
The builder who installed the bathroom has shut down now, so can't get him back. Any ideas?

  • Hard to diagnose from this side of the screen, so I'm going to need your help.

Sit back and relax. Visualise your bathroom as you stare at the screen. Good, that's it - go over the new installation in your head from one end to the other until I tell you to...

STOP! That's it! Your bath-shower mixer tap hasn't been sealed down on to the bath's top ledge surface, so the water is coming down your wall and getting under the tap/mixer and then through to below the bath.

Could you post a photo of your bath/shower mixer tap, please?
  • Can you remove the bath side panel to see underneath? If so, do this whilst aiming the shower head at the taps.

i had a similar issue and it turned out to be the tiles on the bathroom walls around the bath.  the grouting was not waterproof as the bath had not been designed to be used as a shower.  i put sticky vinyl over the tiles and that resolved the problem.
  • Nope - I'm not sensing that.

this is the sort of question that seems a bit pointless on a forum. the only logical procedure to follow is simply find out where it's leaking from.

And do re-check the bath trap isn't leaking
  • Nah - it's the seal under the taps. I can see it quite clearly...

Thanks for all your comments, sarcastic and not.
It is definitely only leaking when the shower is on, not from the bath, so that rules out the trap and sink.
If I was there, I may have more chance, but I'm not, so just trying to get some ideas.

  • Pffft, ideas? What's wrong with the actual cause? How many times do I have to...

    :-)

(I have a reason for suspecting the mixer-to-bath seal... :-(  )  Will you be able to check it out yourself, or are you passing on the info to the owner?
