I was due to fly to Japan in April with Emirates. I booked the fight through Expedia. The flight was cancelled obviously but I cannot get a refund. Emirates say I must request through Expedia and Expedia say i must get it from Emirates. I just go round in an endless email loop with them.
Surely refusing to refund for a service you did not provide meets the legal definition of fraud?

Assuming you paid Expedia and they paid Emirates you will deal with Expedia. Emirates will refund back the payment so unless your statement shows Emirates, any refund will be sent to Expedia who should then refund you.

As above but would just add that Expedia are unlikely to refund you until Emirates refund them.

Why have you waited so long? If you used a credit card, do an S75 claim. Much too late now for a chargeback.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

An s75 claim is highly likely to be rejected when the debtor-creditor-supplier chain is broken via the use of an intermediary (Expedia) as a fourth party, assuming they weren't acting as a package holiday organiser by including non-flight services.

like eskbanker says - I went through an intermediary so no chargeback claim. I didn't atually leave it I just got depressed and exhausted by the endless email ping-pong where they blame each other.

That's not what I said - use of an intermediary precludes s75 but doesn't affect chargeback (a different process), but the latter must be claimed within 120 days so it's all moot now anyway....

If you had evidence of the cancellation, your money could have been back in your hands as quickly as a week had you gone down the chargeback route.

No doubt that would have raised your spirits.

Why were you messing around with Emirates and Expedia instead of going for a quick kill via a chargeback ?

I hadn't heard of chargebacks until recently ans kind of assumed Emirates wouldn't act like a pack of criminals. I am now unable to email them as they seem to have blocked my email address. I still don't see how this isn't fraud and why our politicians aren't sticking up for us by threatening to kick Emirates out of the country unless they reimburse British customers.

With all due respect you've only got yourself to blame.
You had four months in which to be proactive but chose to rely on the largess of Emirates/Expedia.
To expect the Government to kick them out because you failed to exercise  your legal rights within the appropriate timescale is not a sensible or likely outcome.
  • Emirates have been refunding agents. They won’t refund you directly because you booked through Expedia so you aren’t their client. Expedia should have your refund and should be passing it on. You need to deal with them
