broadband switch from Virgin media to vodafone

Am due to have vodafone broadband/phoneline set up next week. Our phone point comes in by the front door and we have an old BT one which I believe they can use. But our router is plugged in elsewhere in the house. Will the vodafone router also be able to be plugged into the same thing? or is it not that simple?

Router is plugged in to BT master socket not VM sockets .

Thanks. So they'll install a new master socket by the front door? Or replace the Virgin socket with a BT one?

No VM network has nothing to do with the BT / Open Reach network .
Depending upon the age of the BT master socket they will replace  . Router is then powered from that and requires a power source .

Thanks again. Is it standard practise to just have the router by the front door where the phone line comes in or are you given a choice about where to have it?

Depends pre covid you could have it moved by OR person .Or you could have a longer lead from the master socket .

Hadn't even thought about the Covid situation! I don't really mind where they put it as long as everything works well. I have Open reach coming round next week so hopefully they can do whatever needs doing, but I'm concerned if they just put it by the front door the signal will be weaker in the rooms we need it.

Make sure you have your contracts sorted out. You need to terminate the Virgin one yourself as they do not use Openreach and it is not a simple transfer. It is not easy/possible to transfer your landline number.

Thanks. Yes, I gave notice to virgin and the vodafone install is a week or so before Virgin cuts off. Landline number has been transferred.

If BT install is not suitable post back after install and forum can say how you can move router yourself .
  • Warning, Watch Virgin like a hawk, they will do everthing possible to stall your cancellation and go on charging as long as possible. Nasty people, so go in hard if you get messed about. Took me 3 months to escape.
