Quick question & I know it sounds stupid but does a boiler need to be on constant for the thermostat to work/take effect?
Are you talking about a setting on the programmer (Off/Constant/Timed)??  If so then the thermostat will switch the boiler on and off whenever it switches depending on the temp (on Constant). If it’s on Timed then the thermostat will only switch it on /off during Timed period.

Yes sorry thats what I mean, at the moment I just tend to switch the boiler to constant when it gets chilly, haven't really used the thermostat.

I have storage heaters so no thermostat. I tend to have my living room at about 18C.

This has been discussed many times in the Gas and Electricity section of this forum. It usually gets stupid posts from people who believe 12C is balmy!

It is also pertinent to point out that some people think a fixed themostat set to, say, 16C in a cold hallway, means their living room will also be at 16C.

    Postively tropical
My father is in his 70's and feels the cold, yet refuses to wear anything more than a t-shirt (and trousers before anyone comments!) around the house, so ours is set to 25 at the moment, going down to 21 after 11pm overnight.

My greenhouses are warmer than my house! The snag of growing tropical plants I guess!

Last night my house was 17C inside, so I didn't bother turning the heating on. Today it was 15C when I got home, and I have turned it up to 19C.

    Based on the outside temperature as I don't have a thermometer inside I've voted 0 - 5.

This is because I've only lived in properties which had GCH and DG for just under the last 4 years and was seasoned for not having heat to put on . It was always an extra jumper, blanket or hot water bottle in the family home (one gas fire to heat the whole property) and I carried that on when I left.

Even now I only put the heating on for an hour-ish when it's really cold in winter and layers are not helping.
