Most internet providers who piggy back on the BT network have their own equipment installed in the BT exchanges so whilst there might not be the need for an engineer visit there is sometimes external switching to do or occasionally a visit to the exchange.
It isnt just  a case of there already being a line there.
Not true - it's usually only SKY, Talktalk and sometime PlusNet - it's called LLU (local Loop Undbundling) check the BT avaialabilty site which shows whats available and which suppliers have LLU at which exchange

John Lewis are always out of stock , Sunset business now.  Stick with Bt and Voda they have decades of service behind them .
Well I placed my order with them with no issues. They are run through plusnet which certainly isn't a sunset business so as long as my order went through I don't see how they couldn't honor it? or if not just hand me over to plusnet to fulfill it.

Having said that, my internet was off for over a week while I moved house and have since setup a temp mifi one to tide me over and having checked my missed messages I see one in my john lewis dashboard saying there may be issues installing at my address but no further update was given and that was on the 27th nov. I also received an email on the 25th of November saying there has been a delay processing my order and await updates of which there has been no update til now as of the 5th dec. So no idea really what the status of it is.
I made a reply to the ticket they issued in my dashboard but they have not replied to that as of a couple of days ago.

I am very pleased I sorted out this mifi as I was considering 'holding on' with no internet until the landline got installed. This mifi is very satisfactory for light browsing but I would not want to use it all the time as I like my old fashioned wired connections.

The lack of updates is disconcerting though. I wonder if they have buckled under the additional load. It is a question of whether it will just be further delayed and finally get done or if it will fall through altogether. Doesn't help not being able to get any feedback as yet.
