  • Sorry.  I lost my sense of humour this morning. It might be the wine I drank yesterday.  😬

Aww I don’t say they when I mean a single person. That’s far too confusing. And he/she is very cumbersome.  English is an evolving language, and soon it will evolve a gender neutral pronoun hopefully.
Do you also use a similarly offensive word to replace 'you' when need a word to describe it in singular and plural forms?

'They' has been used in the singular for hundreds of years, is perfectly sensible and doesn't offend women (in particular but not limited to them).

I agree with you, except that 'they' is very ambiguous. Take this example from a newspaper article:
"Rowan Thompson, 17, had just returned from a jog with Joanna Thompson when they attacked her"
    How many people attacked whom?

I'm really sorry if I offended anyone. I don't think of 'he' as offensive, but I'll bear your view in mind.  To be frank, I almost wrote he/she, and I would have done on my PC. On the tiny device I was actually writing on at the time, it was beyond my capabilities.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I'm guessing the 'tiny device' was your brain.

    Brrrrr-cheeesh!

Wouldn't you need to describe who they were before referring to them as they?

Thank you for taking it on board.  I know you didn't mean anything by it, it's just that it does irk a lot when you're a woman in a male dominated industry.   Even my FMB membership letters come addressed to Mr Doozergirl. 🙄

    My brain hurts now.  ☺️
