Do architects have a business dependancy on specific builders?

I am playing an extension for the first time and I am wondering what pitfalls I need to look out for when choosing an architect? I have already identified a builder that I would like to use but am unsure what to do about an architect,  Is it normal for an architect to be tied to a specific builder for business reasons?

There might be a preferred relationship the other way.  A builder may trust the information provided by one architect more than another.

no.  you can pay for architect services separately to the builder.  they don't have to be connected.

Our architect suggested builders to quote but I added one of my own choosing. I’m just waiting for the quotes now

Many architects will not take on the job if the builder is chosen first.

Is there a reason you are choosing an architect for an extension?

The OP can speak for themselves, but I presume it is because they want the extension designed by someone who designs.

"You've chosen Fred Bloggs as a builder so I am sorry but I cannot do your design. I will be including flying buttresses and a portcullis in my design and I know the Fred Bloggs is not capable of building these"

I had a very bad experience with a builder a previous address, and have seen some pretty hideous looking extensions and as someone said above I want it designed by someone who does designs.  I don’t want a builder turning up with a pile of bricks in the back of an estate car (think james cordon as the builder character in Gavin and Stacy)  and thinking look at this idiot I can do whatever I like
