No idea if it'll help but there's a Canon Inkjet Print Utility in the Windows Store.

Open the Store, click on Search and start typing Canon ... available options will be in the results.

Thanks - how do I set about doing this .... ?
Follow the instructions in the user manual.
Downloaded the user manual, it's only 1004 pages ;)
I've set it up as <<connection without using wireless router (Windows XP) >> and I have connected my PC to the printer successfully but sadly, it disconnects the internet. I was trying to print a page from Google maps, so had to load the page, then disconnect internet/connect printer to get it to print, which was a bit complex when it just used to work seamlessly on the old PC!
    Thoughts?

I suppose this could be the issue when your using an outdated, unsupported Windows OS (XP). With Windows 10 you do have the option of using Windows Direct to connect to the printer without losing your standard network connection, I believe.

Sorry, I *am* using W10 (and was on the old PC which worked fine) but what I quoted was direct from the 1000 page instruction manual

Spent ages yesterday messing with this - removed printer and then reinstalled it, but, no better.
    Any other suggestions?
What happened to @toshi ? He used to be good with printers :D

Just an update to this - I dug out the old laptop yesterday to try and compare settings to see why the old worked fine and the new won't.
All settings seemed the same apart from old laptop was connected to the router 2.4 Ghz and the new one was using 5 (?) (we have a dual band router)
I set new laptop to 2.4 and so far, so good - how odd, but it works ... fingers crossed!!!

Ah! That sort of rings a bell. If I have my laptop connected to the 5GHz band (my printer is on the 2.4GHz band) then I can print OK but I can't scan to my laptop - I have to scan to USB. If I connect my laptop to the 2.4GHz band then I can make scanning work.
