Phone lines and Broadband when moving house

Do your current supplier do a house move service?  I am with ee for home and mobile and they added a large amount of data ( 100Gb i think) to my mobile contract to tide over any delays getting broadband up and running in the new house.  Phone was working on day 1, internet took a few days to get working.
We currently live with relatives so don;t have a phone line or broadband.
  • We had an issue with BT saying we had to give 30 days notice on our account to close it.  We didn't have 30 days notice about our moving date, so that was impossible.  Eventually after complaining loudly and at length, they agreed they could cut the service to the property sooner.  Otherwise the new occupants would have been able to use our phone line and broadband to their hearts content, and we would have been on the hook for whatever charges were run up.

We also weren't able to arrange the broadband to be connected at the new place immediately, we had about 4 days with no service.  To get over this gap, I added a 10GB data boost to my phone for the month.  My provider (Three) allows unlimited tethering so I was able to get wi-fi for my laptop etc.  Obviously there was no Netflix etc. but it was perfectly useable.
  • Partially resolved.

Vendors have given notice so we can do an active line take over. Subject to Openreach we should get Broadband 5 days after we move in. Not ideal but much better than we thought.

Incidentally, the lady at Sky mentioned they have had cases where the vendors haven't been able to cancel due to the terms and so new owners can't get broadband of phone for 3 months!

On the contrary the new owners get 3 months free just not with the supplier of their choice

3 months of free phone line but not broadband unless they have the router or know the settings.

Settings are available on line, admittedly a tech savvy 17 year old helps as well.  . I imagine most people would cancel their contract, you can  cancel any contract if you pay it off and if you move your supplier with you they usually negotiate outstanding fees. As some one with a lot of friends down under you wouldn't want me having free access to your phone line!

Yes, I realise it is extremely likely and there are potential work arounds. It is just very daft that it has the potential to happen. Once you own a house you should be able to block any subscriptions going to it.
