TV faulty after less than 4 years

Options
I bought a TV from Tesco just under 4 years ago. unfortunately the screen has developed coloured areas. Am I within my rights do demand a replacement or a refund. it was not a cheap television and a brand that I would have expected better from.

No, its 4 years old and presumably only had a 1 or 2 year gtee.  even if they did offer to replace they could deduct 4 years worth of use so wouldnt leave much to play with.
    how much was the TV

if you are looking for a new Tv richer sounds offer a 6 year gtee and JL offer a 5 year gtee
  • Dose it not come under the Consumer Rights Act 2015?  as I would have expected it to last a lot longer than 4 years.

Yes it will but you have to prove that the fault is inherent to manufacture and any refund will take into account the usage you've had from it. You may be able to get the to try an repair it but it may well be uneconomical to do so. As already asked, what was the original cost?
  • I think you misunderstand the Act.  It doesn't automatically entitle you to a replacement or refund after 4 years.  There are a few hoops to jump through first, and any action will be tempered by the four years' use you've already had.  The two posters above are correct.
  • As per @neilmcl ... also, what was the make/model of the TV? (A big name brand, together with a higher cost, will be expected to last a lot longer than a no-name el-cheapo TV).
  • It was a £600 Sony.

What size / model / price of TV?
Not that will be particularly relevant as many times mass-produced consumer items are really treated as disposable and only 2 - 3 year life expectancy before obsolete.
That is not a practice I subscribe to, but it is not an uncommon one.
  • I was looking up the average life expectancy of a LCD tv and I understand it should be around 16 years.

I do Believe obsolete depends on the item and its use. This tv was a 49in Android TV which still has many years of life in it as it is updatable.

Then commission your own independent inspection of the TV and if the fault is inherent, you can task Tesco if they'd like to repair it, replace it with a similar spec TV or partially refund you.  I doubt the depreciation is straight-line over 16 years, though.  Have a look on eBay to see what TVs of that type are selling for today.  My guess would £200-300.
