Lenders requested EWS1 on a freehold house

There was an article in the Sunday Times yesterday about the EWS1 issue and they reported how someone buying a house had been told the lender needed an EWS1 form as the house had some exterior cladding. After so negotiation they apprently backed down but this is a worrying development.
The article also mentioned recently built flats and houses without proper internal fire breaks (within the walls/timber frames) that need remedial works.
A further comment was that the 'reforms' to the EWS1 requirements government are looking at are minimal and therefore there is unlikely to be any significant change to the current position that many leaseholders find themselves in.

I'm not surprised at all that lenders might be concerned about external wall fire safety in houses, as well as flats. There's an estate gone up near here recently - and the houses are all metal frame with cladding. No different to the way flats are constructed... So why wouldn't the same concerns apply?
The tenure is totally irrelevant. Any fire won't pause to check if it's freehold or leasehold.0 -
