Ryanair's perverse luggage charges

I just went to add a 20kg bag to my flight home to London on Ryanair next weekend and they wanted £40. However, I noticed that the fare for the same flight was now less than £6- and when you book a new flight the bag is only £20. So, I just booked a new flight for £25.66 including the bag! How mad is that?!!

Woo. Adding that's after the fact on cheap airlines costs more than doing it later. Why not try at the gate and spend even more.My personal view is that 1 checked bag should be mandatory on all flights to push the price up to a reasonable level to sustain the business reasonably and stop the overhead locker !!!!!!. YMMV.0

The original flight was £16.99 but at the time I didn't think I would need luggage so didn't book any.0

Not sure what routes you're travelling on, but I've never seen problems with the overhead bins. That said, I'm fortunate to ensure I'm not blessed with Ryanair (but do use other budget airlines frequently).💙💛 💔0 -

Why? Because I was working and had a 27" screen in my bag! Be difficult to sneak that through in a backpack

The poster wasn't replying to you - read the post quoted in their post.
They were responding to someone who suggested 1 checked bag should be included in all fares.

Does anyone know, if I travel to Europe with Ryan air but don’t purchase any baggage allowance, I check in online, would I then get away with boarding with a 10kg bag? How would the staff at the gate know? Is there a way for them to tell?0

You might, you might not, & then it will cost you !!
The gate staff look at peoples bags.
Any that look obviously oversized & or overweight they will take you to one side & either weigh you bag or put it in the bag sizer.
They used to have a set of scales at the boarding gates but I have not seen them for a long while.
