this is why i prefer british gas as they use their own employees who have been trained by them. contractors for SSE would have been vetted but doesn't sound like they have been vetted well enough.[DELETED USER] said:AskAsk said:gas safe will make them put it right if it has not been done to the required gas Safe standards. as to whether it is a boiler that should do what you want, gas Safe won't be able to deal with that, so you have to rely on SSE complaints. there is no ombudsman as it is not energy but consumer. SSE may have contracted out the job to the local trades people rather than employed them themselves? were they in sse van and had sse uniform?
Yes, multiple contractors, not in SSE vans. Going to call them in a minute and start the complaints process. Will explain what we want. They are going to have to pay for a new ceiling now because they caused the leak.
I'm going to suggest to them that they refund us because we have no faith in their ability to rectify this problem, having tried several times and still failed, and seeing as their contractors have failed to even meet the minimum safety standard. The quote we have for ripping it out and replacing with a combi boiler is actually less than what they charged for their botched job, and comes with a better warranty.
i find with complaints, always best to put it in writing so you can state clearly the event timeline, the issues that occured and any communication you have had with them, so they can see the timeline of events and all that took place. this is difficult to explain clearly over the phone and the phone operator is not going to be the person dealing with the complaint, so ask for an email address or postal address where you can send the complaint to.
any damage to your property from the water leak can be claimed under your buildings insurance. it may be from plumbing pipes rather than central heating pipes or it may be from old central heating pipes that they did not work on, but got disturbed from the job without them being aware of it.
Funnily enough the plumber was quite critical of British Gas too. Anyway I spoke to them and started the complaint process. They said they will get back to me by the end of play on Monday.
I think they will want to come out and inspect it. I think I'll just tell them that I want to get it fixed by someone we trust and will send them the bill. We have plenty of photographic evidence and the plumber's report so if it came down to it Small Claims Court should go our way. We have been advised that properly fixing it would cost more than to just replace the boiler with a combi, which is what were quoted for.
The quote is cheaper than SSE charged us to fit the wrong boiler. The rest of their work is shoddy too, almost all the radiator valves they replaced have failed within a few years etc.0 -
RIDDOR is the reporting process (name of the regulations) not the organisation responsible - you can fill in a RIDDOR report, but that would go to the Health and Safety Executive. You can't report to RIDDOR.Alanp said:When I used to do my gas course, it was often mentioned that riddor could and has been used for reporting unsafe situations
Unsafe situations also occur in workplaces, where RIDDOR would apply but this is in a private residence.

i have had a combi boiler replaced by british gas as they gave me a discount for being a homecare customer. the discount applied meant that their quote was competitive as otherwise they are very pricy. they did a very good job. british gas can be relied upon to install the boiler correctly but their pricing is not competitive and is about 20% to 40% more than others.[DELETED USER] said:AskAsk said:

'can be relied upon'
that's a good one - the worst jobs I see are those done by British Gas. A lot of British Gas engineers are self employed sub contractors, who get commission for selling products that homeowners don't need.
Moving from SSE to British Gas is jumping from the frying pan into the fire - get a good local installer.
The Homecare scheme is an absolutely con as well.0 -
i beg to differ. from my experience of british gas, i have found them to be very reliable and honest. the homecare scheme is of great value from my experience. they are very pedantic and will always make sure a job is done properly before they will pass it.ComicGeek said:AskAsk said:

i have only had british gas employees come round to do work, so it may be that in areas where they subcontract the work out to contractors in the area, it becomes less reliable.
any boiler installed by british gas comes with 5 years homecare insurance for free. so it is not in their interest to do a poor job as they are committed to maintaining the boiler for 5 years from installation without charging the customer.0 -
BG use loads of subbies, I don't know where you got the idea all their engineers are directly employedthis is why i prefer british gas as they use their own employees who have been trained by them.I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.1 -
OP, I'm slightly confused, what do you mean by the overflow pipe is too small so it's been condemned ?I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

Me too. I’m going to assume gas pipe as 22 and 15mm mentioned.southcoastrgi said:OP, I'm slightly confused, what do you mean by the overflow pipe is too small so it's been condemned ?0 -

I checked the report, it's the "open vent". I can see it now it has been pointed out, the part where it is visible has been replaced with 22mm pipe but once it's out of sight in the ceiling void it's 15mm pipe. It leads to an overflow tank in the loft.
The gas pipe was also too small and had to be replaced, which SSE did on the second attempt to make it work properly. They had to replace some other pipework as well because it was making a lot of banging and vibrating noises. It still bangs a lot, apparently it's a water hammer effect and the plumber has recommended some gizmo that will stop it happening.0 -
Yes you are quite right, I should have read the op correctly, I thought it was a rented propertyEmmia said:
