Brittania hotels refund issue

My daughter booked a stay at a Brittania hotel which she couldn't keep due to the last lockdown.  She has contacted them a few times but no reply. There was a message on their home page stating that they would contact guests due to stay during lockdown but they didn't contact her.  She has now contacted them again and they are telling her to claim a chargeback from her debit card.  Surely they should be refunding her direct?  What is the time limit for these claims as this stay was booked for the end of March?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

The time limit for chargeback is 120 days so yes, she's well beyond that and chargeback will no longer be an option.  If the hotel was closed then they should refund her, but if it was open and she chose not to stay then that would probably negate any rights to a refund, although they may offer a credit to rebook....

She had a lucky escape actually staying there tbh, Britannia Hotels are consistently the worst out there. Add to that their dubious practices like kicking all their staff onto the street when they shut a hotel in the Highlands in March.....
  • Depends on if the hotel was open or not. If it was on and she couldn’t get there, that’s her problem unfortunately

Whilst I do not like Britannia Hotels they did not kick out all their staff and it was not due to hotel closing.

"More than a dozen employees were given the letter from hotel manager Mark Johnston also telling them to vacate their accommodation immediately.

The letter said: "Taking the latest government advice, this letter is to confirm that with effect from 19 March 2020, your employment has been terminated and your services are no longer required."

It added: "You are asked to vacate the hotel accommodation immediately, returning any company property."

They did go back on it when it hit the press, and claimed it was an admin error, but its not a good look.

Came here to write the same thing. I'd just count myself lucky I didn't have to walk through the doors of a Britannia cesspit.

Edited to add: as.other posters have said, if the hotel was closed, then Britannia owe a refund.

I do know all about it thanks and it was not all staff and the staff had been told prior to letter they could stay until they found other accommodation.

Oh so they only threw some staff out with no notice, not all, so that's ok!
  • Sounds like @comeandgo probably has more info and facts than the press who are just looking at headlines
  • Thank you for your replies.  It wasn't that she couldn't get there but non essentail travel was banned due to lockdown.  Brittania had a message on their home page saying that they would contact everyone to refund money but they never did.  She has tried contacting them many times but has had no luck.
