Key release

I was wondering if there is a most common time in the day for this to happen? There are 3 houses in the chain. The guy who is buying mine is a first time buyer and the owner of the house I'm buying is vacant possession.

The reason I am asking is that I dont want to book a removal man with a van for say 9am and to not get the keys until like 3pm as you have to pay an hourly wait time of approx £60 an hour.

If key release is usually around midday it would make sense to ask the removal man to come at around 11am

You do realise you have to be completely out of the old place by completion, because it's no longer your house...?
Is he really going to be able to empty the house in an hour?

Completion time is when everybody in the chain is ready to complete.

Ok - so you're paying how much for your new house - £100k, £200k, £500k?  And you're concerned about an hour or three at £60 per hour?

It took our removal men 3 hours to load the van.
  • Really? the last time i moved we loaded van in 1 hour. Everything is dissembled and just to put in.
Therefore if removal van came at 11am it should be packed up by 12. Solicitor said its unlikely keys will be released by then

  • When I moved out of 3 bed house it took 4 journeys in a big Luton van and about an hour to load each time. That was 2ith 2 adult males loading the van with everything ready to load.

Are you saying you are only moving items or do you have very few possessions?
  • Im moving:
1 king bed and mattress (dismantled)
    1 double mattress
    1 sofa
    1 armchair
    dinning table (dismantled)
    4 chairs (dismantled)
    2 beside tables
    1 wardrobe
    1 55 inch tv
    4 medium packed boxes

If that's all we owned I'd hire a van and do it myself. We were moving a 5 bedroom house.
  • Only reason i'm hiring is because i need a hand with the lifting to be honest
  • You may be okay, although I'd say pushing it tight. The problem is that you aren't going to know when everyone else is ready to complete. From what I've read on here it usually some time between 1pm and 5pm but there is know formula and depends on a lot of factors.

You could probably get away with not having the van turn up until around 11 but you may then have to wait until 5 before it can be unloaded. In such a situation hiring a van may be a better option if you can get someone to help with loading and unloading. You can pick it up in the morning and load up and then leave everything in it until the end of the day if necessary.
