If people stopped phoning the RAC during working hours just because they needed a tyre, the RAC would be able to respond faster to the people who've actually broken down...

It was a puncture not a new tyre, once they arrived they were extremely quick repairing it and getting her going again and I overheard him saying he would follow her home.

So the RAC took the wheel off, unmounted the tyre, assessed it, repaired the tyre with a patch of bing, refitted the tyre, tested it, balanced it and refitted it?

To be honest, I’ve never seen a regular AA or RAC patrol van equipped with tyre fitting equipment.

Maybe they squirted in one of those puncture repair things that are supplied with new cars in lieu of spare wheel to allow the lady to get going and then the tyre is wasted afterwards and she'll need to go to a centre and get a new tyre tomorrow anyway.  Makes you wonder why she did not do that herself, or the OP could have assisted.  She'd have been at the tyre place in half an hour rather than all day.

If they don’t want people using the service they shouldn’t offer the cover. I’ve used them to replace a flat tyre and am quite happy to do so again given that it is included in my level of cover,

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I dont know exactly what he was doing but when they once did it for me they removed the tyre and put a rubber bung in the enlarged hole whilst still on the rim the re pumped it. so they can do it
