Work out the mileage done and multiply by 0.45p per mile.  That's your losses.  If they give you a free service or something, then that's goodwill territory.

How is that a loss? The OP has paid petrol, tyre wear etc, amounting to 45p/mile, let's say. But they would have paid this out regardless of whether they had been paying the finance deal or not.
If anything the OP has benefitted from an interest free loan for 8 months. The only loser has been the garage who presumably haven't been paid for the car!
I would say it would be reasonable that journeys to the dealership to sort this out should be covered by those responsible.  Those are specific journeys made because of  the error.

As for the interest, I would be surprised if the finance company did not charge interest from the day the car was collected, so I'd expect (outside of any goodwill given) that they will look to get the amount owing from the OP.  This would already include the interest, so the OP will not have benefitted from an interest free loan.  Any interest on the money sitting in his account will have been minimal.

E.G.  If the monthly payments were £300, then the OP will likely receive a request for £2400.  This would include any interest that was part of the monthly payment.  It may be that the finance house might as a gesture of goodwill come to some other arrangement.  But I would say that then above is what I would expect.

These have been unusual times and unusual fixes are being applied and unusual timescales taken to resolve things.
I suspect this would have come to light eventually even if you had done nothing. You have had the car thus the only loser is whoever should have benefitted from your monthly payments, presumably the finance company - a large enough organisation to find this out and follow through when their systems do eventually catch up.
You could perhaps expect a small gesture for your cooperation and efforts to resolve it quickly but as its really been mostly benefit for you so far, I don't think you have a case to ASK for anything significant.
A pragmatic business however might offer you a decent sweetener just to get things tidied up and not roll over a year end or similar.

Sorted by Ford Credit, 3 payments wiped off as good will gesture, I’ve paid lump sum to get the books back right and £100 towards accessories.

The reason this issue happened was the wrong VIN was associated to my credit account and they hadn’t notified Ford of my car being picked up hence not creating the new Ford account number (my first car had the wrong engine!)

Well done, that’s a good result.
