Play.com - PS3 40gb discontinued???

I just called play.com to enquire why the ps3 deal they were offering earlier is not not available, and was told that the PS3 40GB was now discontunied and they would be getting no more stock!!!

Has anyone else heard of this???

Common practice for expensive items for play.com. I've seen the same thing happen with laptops etc to about four or five different people now. Personally I'd only rely on play.com for DVDs etc. Anything expensive and you have to remember you're not covered by consumer rights laws because you're buying outside the UK.

AFAIK, in the UK it's the 60GB model that will be discontinued with the introduction of a 80GB model and continued sale of the 40GB model (which was only just introduced recently).

Hasn't been discontinued AFAIK. Although from what I've seen of play.com their stock system is a complete mess when it comes to the electrical and electronic goods. I think they basically dropship on behalf of other companies. But they do frequently advertise something as being in stock and will let you pay for it and then when your item doesn't turn up it is down to you to chase up and find out that they never had it in stock in first place and don't intend to have it in stock but they'll usually continue to keep advertising it as being in stock even though they no longer sell the item.

the 60gb ps3's have been discontinued (i'm glad i got mine when i did), but the 40gb hasn't been discontinued anywhere yet.

i have read rumours that we are not going to have the 80gb ps3 but i'm not too sure if its true or not

But thats not what the OP is venting about, I understand it to be the fact they are no longer selling an item that they used to.

40GB is the new one, 60GB has been stopped, 80GB should be coming soon, not sure if its been confirmed though

Why im venting is they are saying the 40gb is being discntinued, on the offer they only put on today, but they are still seeling the single model, and i was very unaware that anyone was discontinuing the 40gb when everywhere else seems to be discontinuing the 60GB. Sorry if i didnt make it clear

I understood it to be play's claim of the discontinuance which doesn't seem to be the case. Besides anyone is taking a huge risk buying expensive items from play anyway. I was just expounding on a definite pattern of behaviour of play when it comes to these types of items, they'll mislead (intentionally or not) but what they claim to sell seems to have little relation to reality.

I got my 40gb last weekend with 2 cool games (kane & Lynch and Assassins Creed) from GAME on High Street. Cost about £320 something. I'm very happy with it but then I tend not to buy electrical stuff online as I'd rather have a shop to take it back to if it ends up having problems.

Think the person you spoke to may have gotten confused about which model has been discontinued .
