Furlong

Options
Hi I have been a self employed hairdresser for 20 years.  I got universal credit through first lockdown but it ended as I own a buy to let and they exempt it for six months because of the pandemic, didn’t get the self employment grant because of my buy to let. (Was on working tax credit but got caught out with the government promoting UC for self employed which left me worse off). As I didn’t  earn enough from hairdressing after lockdown ended I have now managed to get a 30 hours contract as a Christmas temp. I did the induction last week, till training this Friday and my first shift today, then I am working Tuesday and Wednesday before next lockdown.  Big question can I get furlong? I can’t get universal credit because of my buy to let despite not making hardly any profit after service charges, and I don’t think I can get anything else either. My husband is a taxi driver so again because of lockdown we are left with no income. My husband has also just had a cancer diagnosis.

have you been paid for the new job yet? If not it’s unlikely that you’ll meet the RTI deadline

In that case you won’t be eligible for furlough, you’ve fallen through the new starters gap. To be eligible for furlough your new job would need to have paid you & submitted that RTI before the end of the month.

is there no chance the shop will stay open for click and collect? Or is an essential shop?

You had to have had an RTI submitted for you by 30 October, and it sounds very unlikely that you did.

Probably won’t apply to me if they did stay open for click and collect as I wasn’t on that department. Worked for woman’s wear in Debenhams.

RTI is real time information, when the payroll is submitted the company tell HMRC who’s working for them and how much they’re getting paid. The government set a deadline to stop fraud, looks like you’ve fallen foul of it.
  • Just to clarify, it’s furlough - furlong is a unit of measurement, approximately 201m.
Worth knowing in case you need to discuss it with anyone at work etc :)

Honestly can’t help but feeling really let down by the government, didn’t get self employed grant despite being self employed for 20 years and now got a job but won’t get furlong. Can’t win can I? Just hope they will keep me after lockdown but not a real solution as my contract ends beginning of January, so disheartening,

So sorry that you felt that you had to comment on my poor English especially as I have not been educated in England but have lived here for 30 years. My sincere apologies and thank you for your most valuable information and assistance as it has really help me with  my queries and especially as I am looking forward to a month without any income and a cancer diagnosis for my husband. Hope you have a fabulous evening with your family and feel great about what you have contributed with tonight I will forward your assistance to my daughters in case I have failed them as a mother with my poor English and you made me feel really good about myself and my future. Please do comment on any further mistakes I may have made as it is of real importance to me. I will apologise to my work colleagues for any mistakes I may make when discussing anything with them.
