Caravan Site Closure

Options
Our caravan site, like many others, is closing down again with the lockdown! It's only been open about a total of 2 months this year! All we've been offered is £500 'compensation' which is just taken off next year's fees so no actual money back to us!! Does anyone know how I address the massive problem I have with this! We pay around £5000 a year site fees and my argument is that in no other business would you expect to pay that much money and not get anything for it! I've checked their accounts and last year alone they made £20 million *gross* profit! If all the holiday companies and other businesses can refund, why can't they? I don't know what to do about it though...or if there's anything I can do!!

Your site fees are not just for access, they cover things like the pitch, roads, utility upkeep etc. Your only refund argument might be if there was an entertainment provision in the contract.

Gross profit is not what matters, net is the profit after costs which is important and even then how much profit has made is irrelevant.

The services have still been rendered, access to the site is an issue caused by the government, but site has still kept up it's end of the bargain.
  • Thank you for your reply Matt x 3! I had a feeling they were covered as to not give us any money back but I just find it so frustrating that they're obviously making a fortune and we're getting nothing from it!

Has your caravan been there all year? If so I agree the only thing you might be able to argue is an entertainment refund which would probably amounts of the £500 they're offering
An answer isn't spam just because you don't like it......

There is an article on the MSE website that covers this.
Only £500 back from £5k seems low.
In any event, how much would you normally visit the site in November?

My husband stays there through the week as he works in the area so we use it very regularly.

Sounds a somewhat larger business than just a single caravan site. Nor is gross profit of any great importance if you have no understanding of what it means.

Judging by the rules on BBC website, he may still be allowed to stay, as it is for work.  Assuming his work stays open and he cannot work from home.

Not if the owners close it and access to it.

They're not a small entity but any stretch - there's the huge site that we're on as well as another one in the area plus they're owners of the adjoining leisure complex!

I just saw that on the Government website but I'm assuming if they're closing the site, he wouldn't be able to stay! 🤔
