Shared Electric Gates

Hi all,
I'm looking at getting some gates installed on my shared driveway (rentals have right of way). My house is on the right and the neighbours on the left, driveway through the middle. I do not want to attach to his wall as that isn't right or fair and I would be mad if it was the other way round so how would this work in regard to erecting it?
I would have to have posts installed on both sides as I can't have one side attached and the other not as it will look silly. Or is it possible to have 1 gate that swings open and finishes parallel with my wall? I'm concerned about space too as it isn't a very wide opening.
Thanks

If the drive is shared with the neighbour, ask them if you can fix the gate to their house, I assume they would be opening the gate to get in anyway.Otherwise, a post each side I suppose, gates cant open out over the pavement, so a long gate would use up your drive when it opens (and the gate has to fasten to something).I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Who owns the driveway and who has rights of way on it?
Be very very careful.0 -
I saw some gates recently that expand and collapse to one side.0

The neighbours on the left have nothing to do with the property. The neighbours on the right of me have right of way as they have a parking space. I own the property so can do as I please as long as the neighbour with right of way has access.0

Another thing also, the neighbours are rentals so I would need permission from the landlord or just notify them?0

This isn't really a motoring topic so probably best over on the Homes (DIY) section if you can get the thread moved. You may get more appropriate help over there.0 -
No attachment to the wall on neighbour's side means that your only option would be a sliding gate that retracts to your side?
Bt, yes, of course you will need the owner's position to install anything on his side, however minimal.
You will also need to agree who pays for maintenance, breakdowns, how security is arranged (key code, no. of remote controls, etc). Potentially fraught with problems.
If I was the neighbour and I just received a note saying 'I am installing these, it's my drive' then I would oppose it on principle. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Have you also considered how deliveries and tradesmen would access the houses?
Electric fob activated gates cannot work where more than one household is involved. Do you have a bell at the gate to get attention? Who's house would it ring in? Even if you constructed post boxes at the entrance, you have now limited access for deliveries of anything bigger than a letter, or needing a signature, to those times when somebody is in residence.
Whichever way you look at it, that would be a substantial interference to the use and enjoyment of a right of way.0 -
A house nearby us has a shared driveway and gates. The gates come most of the way across and there is a smaller gate on each side for pedestrian access which overcomes the problem of package delivery etc. Their main concerns were, I believe, security and people using the driveway to turn round0
