And there are plenty of people who get buyers remorse after spending £1600 on a DFS sofa and are surprised that they can't get £300 for it second hand just a week later. There was a thread here recently where someone had bought a very expensive sofa - didn't like it once they'd got it - and would have been left very much out of pocket. I'd also recommend looking at the marketplace or places like the british hearth foundation for possible options. They might not have the glitzy showrooms - but you'll get a lot more for your money - and likely you won't need to take out the credit in the first place.

Do they often have fire sales? ;)
  • Our most expensive sofa was £35, and I am very picky.  Definitely no need to get into extortionate debt for one! (It does help that we have a van and can collect furniture easily, but there are often ‘man-with-van’ services.

The great advantage, other than huge savings, is that we can be much more relaxed with 3 boisterous kids and a dog. If we spent a fortune on new sofas, I suspect they would be relegated to the floor. 😂

I can also swap/change/giveaway without guilt if I see a ‘new’ nicer sofa for sale.

  • Did my last rental out from BHF, some other local charity shops, came to just over £600. That price included 2 previously loved sofas, TV unit, a new bed / mattress and numerous other things. Also from that £600, about £50 were curtains from the sale section at Argos for 3 rooms, 2 were blackout curtains.

Everything went with me 2 years later when I purchased my own home and are still being used.

Very rarely do I buy brand new and I'm pleased OP has looked at getting a previously loved sofa for a fraction of the cost.
