Refund to credit voucher

Options
I have returned stock to an online shop but I paid by PayPal but don’t use it anymore so the shop will only issue credit vouchers and not a bank transfer.  It’s for £300 so I could do with the money now

  • If they can't refund to your original payment method, I think they can do what they're doing.  Why can't you accept the refund to PayPal and then withdraw the funds?
  • Unfortunately as you paid by Paypal then they can lawfully elect to return to the same payment method. If that method is no longer viable (*why?) then they can provide the refund via another means - gift/credit vouchers is not unusual. They can lawfully reject a bank transfer if that wasn't the payment method due to Money Laundering regulations.

    * Why can't you reactivate the Paypal account, get the refund, transfer back to your bank account and then inactivate the Paypal account again?
  • Money laundering shouldn't be a concern.
There is nothing stopping a retailer from refunding to a different source to the original payment provided that the refund is traceable, which funds to a UK bank account normally are.

But it is ... or can be. Who's to say the OP didn't fund their Paypal account from ill-gotten gains, used said account to purchase goods, returned the goods for a refund and then sought to get the funds back as cash ... that's a clear example of money laundering. (I'm not saying this is what the OP has done ... just that the seller could take that viewpoint, and lawfully so).

I agree there's nothing stopping the seller refunding by an alternative means, but they don't have to.
  • The retailer said they would refund me when PayPal paid them, it seems my payment went through 2 security checks (Lasted 2 weeks).  (PayPal confirmed) I needed my money quickly so I first claimed I hadn’t used my card and it was fraudulent use, when that didn’t work I claimed not as described but PayPal they wouldn’t refund me at all!  The retailer tried but PayPal refused to process the refund and the retailer gave me a gift card.

So first you told PayPal it was an unauthorised transaction that you didnt make, then you told PayPal that you did make the transaction  but the item wasnt as described.
Sounds to me like you were trying to defraud PayPal and the online shop. Tell me, if PP had accepted the unauthorised use claim, would you have also kept the item?

Seriously?  So after lying to PayPal - twice - you expect them to play ball?

What a daft thing to do.  You're on your own with this one.

  • Thank you for your replies.  I should come clean I didn’t do this, it’s happening to me and my small business.  I wanted to know what people really thought.  I am being made to feel guilty that I won’t give the customer a refund.  I have already lost over £50 on the transaction and endless hours worrying and even more tune replying to the woman.  She’s had a credit note for months now but still I am
being threatened.  Your replies reassure me I al
doing the right thing.  Sorry I did it this way but I wanted to know how people saw it from her point of view. Don’t think bad of me because I just want to make sure I am being fair.  Your replies actually shocked me as you saw it in such a different way. Thank you and sorry again
