The plot thickens, despite my MP raising it with Ofgem, who raised it with my supplier, who promised the amended SMETS2 meter that works in/around Ryedale/RAF Fylingdales….

It turns out they installed a bog-standard SMETS2 meter, which (believe it or not) to their surprise didn’t work…..

what makes it worse, is that they installed several with each one not working.

After I complained again, they replied saying we thought the standard meters would work (despite them clearly stating they wouldn’t in the past).   So I’m back to square one, waiting for an updated comms design to be rolled out.

Still unable to get an EV/TOU tarif
    Still manually submitting monthly readings!

    These companies are absolute jokes!
This is down to the DCC, who operate the data network, as well as Ofgem, GCHQ, and OfCom (they sign off frequency usage), to design and implement a new comms hub suitable for sensitive locations.

The meter will work as a meter, it will just not be smart. The comms hub and the network are very low power, the radar at Flyingales is so powerful that it completely swamps the signal, it is several orders of magnitude higher, in other circumstance it can have issue with car key fobs and jam WiFi.

I accept it is not perfect, but probably best not to rush it and risk compromising national and global security.
  • I agree, re national security, and that a pilot is just that - it may or may not work.. failure is a part of success.

My gripe is that in 2022, the DCC and Eon told me and my MP that they have an alternative comms module built that was being tested.

On this premise, they installed several meters throughout 2022/23, ‘with the new comms module’.

Then in Dec 23, with my meter still not communicating as intended, they came clean and said they had only installed standard meters with standard comms modules, and they would now need to develop a new comms module compatible with RAF Fylingdales….  Which is what they told me they had done back in 2022.
  • We had a replacement meter installed late last year with the 450MHz comms hub and it's working fine. The first one didn't.
