Virgin Hub 4 for new customers

Hi all,

lazily getting round to shop for a new broadband contract and noticed the Virgin offer for M100 service approx £23.50 per month with £100 cash back so ~£17.90 after discount. I looked at the router review when processing and they were supplying the media hub 3 which is pretty poor apparently and over 4(?) years old. The Hub 4 was released more recently and only available to 1Gig customers until maybe the start of this year when it was being released to existing customers on lower tiers as a free upgrade in 'some' locations. Tried to negotiate with the chat service but they said not available for new customers. Any one have any luck with getting this? I'm not in any rush to change (price and service will be similar) but i dont want a new hub where the wifi is crap as i can foresee never getting an upgrade after signing up.

fwiw, just put the hub 3 in modem mode and buy your own router. 

The wifi coverage is actually fine when the hub works.  The problem is the Hub 3 has unstable software, whereby random devices can have good wifi signal but suffer from no internet connection in our observations - perhaps more likely to occur if you have more than a dozen devices.

Never had any issues with previous Hub 2ac.  Got new hub 3 a year ago and it was nothing but trouble.  Bought a new AC1200 gigabit wifi router and Virgin broadband service has been fine ever since.

The main problem with the hub 3 was latency that affected gamers but it also suffered with performance with a lot of wifi devices connected, but many ISP routers do, they are built to a price because they give them out for free so won't be the highest performance.

It is a lot more noticeable with Virgin offering broadband speeds of 100 / 200 / 350 / 500 so probably attracted more complaints than people using phone line based broadband that is often in the range of 30-50 speeds which doesn't tax the hardware as much.

As per the comment above, if you have issues with the Wifi then just put it in modem mode and buy your own Wifi router, I've done this on my 350 connection and everything is super fast and good Wifi coverage from my ASUS GT-AC5300 router.

The Wi-Fi on the Hub 3 is borderline useless, it's not just a latency issue. 
The BT and TalkTalk Hubs are far superior and are built to a price because they give them out for free too.
