  • Thank you all.  He's tried online loans and spoken with his bank.  They won't help as he's in Afghanistan.  Credit card may be a possibility but he needs over £1000.

    What for?
Must be some sort of Welfare Service - perhaps he could approach them. Possibly some sort of salary advance.
Very hard to help without knowing what its for and why he doesn't already have access such as with a Credit Card or an overdraft - is he having credit or fraud problems on his accounts for example?
Why can't you obtain something and lend it to him if its only short term (although I am inherently wary of such situation and there isn't an obvious reason here other than a problem)

I find it not credible that if you are posted to Afghanistan and your service is coming to an end, then the army just tells you to make your own way home?
How many years service does he have? What about his resettlement grant?
Can you not book and pay for his travel arrangements from the UK if necessary?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Sounds like one of them online dating scams to me, but usually its medical bills the scammer is needing money for. The whole story sounds wrong, I can't believe the army just dumps soldiers in foreign countries at the end of service....
  • Deffo sounds like a scam All military can access there bank accounts whilst abroad The Army does NOT leave people abroad at end of service they get them back to UK base and then they pay there own way home
  • Didn't sound massively legit to me, but don't understand why the OP wouldn't just start a Just Giving or similar to get the money off strangers if that's what they wanted? Plenty of people out there willing to give to service people, especially if they believe they've been hard done by from the military.

Hope I am wrong but the original story is classic romance scam.

If he's coming to the end of his service abroad then the final journey from his last station to home is at his own cost, or this is the way it used to be

Ask the military to sort something?
There used to be a bank that “specialised” in military personnel, can’t recall its name now.

Wow seems a bit harsh to send somone overseas then charge them to come back home!
Normally for last tour there is a choice. Quite a few ex-servicemen settled in Germany at he end of their service, similar happens with Cyprus.

You do not get posted to Afghanistan, its an operational tour where you return to your home bae at the end of it.
