MOT- Exhaust

Options
My car passed MOT -two months ago.  No advisory.  The exhaust is blown- top/middle need done.      Trader who sold said wear and tear.  Garage repairing said it's a hard place I am in.  But one guy is dubious this just happened- smallish town so understand loose lips etc.

Anybody with a mechanical mind have an opinion..    I believe the repair with be £180.    I can afford it just such a failure two months in.

Not sure what the question really is. If the box had blown enough at the Mot to be a fail you would still have needed to get it repaired but just two months earlier.
Ah OK just reread and I'm guessing you bought the car with 12 months MOT.
Probably makes very little difference because exhausts can go at any time. Unless you can show that the car should have failed the MOT then I don't see any realistic comeback.

Ok thanks.    Frustrating. The trader saying :   Sorry you are having a a issue with with the exhaust on the car, unfortunately a exhaust is wear and tear and was not blown at the time of sale or mot time otherwise I would have failed a mot.

Two months ago, the exhaust was fine. There was no sign of it blowing.
But, then, that was the same last week, too.

What period of time would you say should MOT testers reasonably be able to foresee into the future?

How long ago did you buy the car, and how old is it?
  • A number of years ago a friend replaced my back box and I asked him if the middle box needed doing too, he said no not yet you'll get another few miles out of it.  I drove 100 yards down the road  (no sign of an issue) to suddenly have it roaring.

OP surely if it was noticeable you would have heard it?  Remember exhausts rot from the inside out so not unusual not to see anything.
  • OP should be OK with loose lips, they only sink ships, don't affect cars.
  • £360 for new starter and middle and rear exhaust.
Suggested I email the trader- see where it goes- probably cite wear and tear.  Also said as I used a credit card go that way also- doesn'tcost me.      I either get a result or nothing from either side- better than not trying.

Your card provider is not going to do a chargeback based on the info provided. You bought a used car with no warranty, and an exhaust is a consumable item.

A few years ago I received an unexpected advisory of minor exhaust gas leak from rear exhaust. The box was quite corroded but I couldn't agree that there was an exhaust gas leak. I contemplated complaining to the DVSA. I knew the motoring ombudsman wouldn't help. In the end even though it wasn't very money saving I just fitted a new back box £30.

An exhaust can fail at any time and is expected once a car reaches a certain age.
What is the OP's question, other than that?
The only option is to check whether the car had any warranty when purchased to cover the exhaust - even if there is a warranty, exhaust is likely excluded.
