Foul smelling washing machine

The smell happens on almost all new washers since they now are only cold fill machines. The best way is to run a  very hot wash with nothing in and use bleach or vinegar in it.Washing on low temp or short cycles is not sufficient to remove scum  and other build up.this is the cobsciquence of cold fill only machines these days
    Huh?

No it's not , it is entirely irreverent whether the machine is cold fill only or not

Wash temp, improper routing of waste pipe, not leaving the door open to air your machine and not cleaning the internal parts you can get to (detergent drawer , inside where the detergent drawer sits , the door, the door seal and the drain filter) contribute to a smelly machine

Personally my hose is routed correctly ,I do all that cleaning and give my machine a hot wash every now and again and I never have had a smelly machine

And yes I have a cold fill only machine

Fyi cold fill only washing machines have been around for donkey years , as I recall it's been a very long time since hot and cold fill domestic machines have been sold

Yes, thanks Homer,  I refrained from responding to the "cold fill" post.  The only part of the machine where the fill temperature is likely to make any difference would be the pipes from water supply, via detergent dispenser to drum.  It would be surprising if these were a major contributor to a smelly machine.  Much more likely is the trend to cooler temperature washes, as you need to get above mid-40s Centigrade to denature proteins.

Bought some Dettol 5 in 1 cleaning liquid but the WM manual states not to put liquid in the detergent draw, only powder. Use a dose ball instead, which is what I do.

This is almost certainly just a physical design issue - the detergent drawer is simply not designed to hold liquid detergent as it's open at one end and liquids would simply pour out right away. The conditioner tray, on the other hand, can hold liquids as it has 4 sides, and will empty this via a syphon when water is added.

Adding liquid detergent via the drawer won't actually harm the machine in any way, but it will just end up going straight in to the washing drum in concentrated form before the inlet water has managed to dilute it.

That Beko only has one cycle with a Prewash looking at the manual.

If the machines run the pump before starting the cycle liquid in the dispenser can get flushed out.

  • Previously I've always purchased the store (Tesco) brand pods. Since switching to Aerial, I've not had the problem since. Thought I would try it out as I've never had the problem with my son's clothes, which I was separately, so deduced it must be the pods not washing the sweater clothes that good.
