The garage wrecked his car. They normally make the customer pay for their incompetence but I suppose it is good that they admit to wrecking his car. However it is unlikely to ever be the same again. It's up to the individual whether they want to take the risk of letting a garage mess with their car.
Even if you don't service your own cars you should always check and photograph your dipstick before and after an oil change so you can guess if they have done the oil change you have paid for and remembered to refill it if they have.

I can only imagine that the number of people who do that is far less than 1%.  Indeed, I have never heard the suggestion previously.  Maybe Fred is uniquely alone.

I wouldn't photograph it, but I most certainly check the dipstick, ensure there is nothing obviously missing or loose and then clean up the mess they made.
Waste of money the service, but it keeps the warranty no-quibble.

I agree with Fred, if you want something doing properly, you do it yourself.

I'm impressed that you and Fred have time to service your cars in between growing your own food, designing and constructing the computer or phone you've typed your comments on (I do find microcircuitry quite tricky but you can't trust Intel or AMD to do the job, can you), knitting your clothes from cat hair and so on.

Engines are incredibly expensive. Many people will have thousands of pounds invested in them. Checking the oil & coolant is so important in maintaining that investment. It really only takes a few seconds. It's daft not to.

I am surprised that incorrect oil has caused this problem. Usually so long as any oil is in there it doesn't matter too much in the short term what sort it is. Has this problem occurred elsewhere? First I ever hear of it.

Funnily enough, I did build this computer myself :)

I didn't mine the precious metals, or build circuitry from component level, but we are talking about things that have some form of QC in place.
Ask yourself why I feel the need to check the oil level and that the filler cap and covers are on properly, and have an oily mess to clean up..... ;)

Yet people fail to check the 2 most important parts of the car on a regular basis....
    Tyres & brakes.
Either of which failing tends to lead to far more strain on the pocket, then a engine failure....
