The above comments do point to the need for more people to have a "good old family solicitor" just like we have ( or in most cases now, used to have ) "good old family doctors".
A different solicitor every time you need one will always end up with the misery and frustration recounted on this thread. If you have a longstanding relationship with a specific solicitor, who you have appointed to sort out your Will, threaten noisy neighbours, handle your divorce, deal as an executor, do all conveyancing etc-----you will find a different situation to the one encountered by seemingly everyone when it comes to slow and awful conveyancing. My family has been with the same family solicitors for over 60 years and seen different members of that same family handle all legal matters. It don't arf make a difference when you are on first name terms, go golfing with them and can call on them anytime. It's like the old family doctors who delivered you into the world and looked after you till you went off to Uni and then London or elsewhere. All that doesn't help someone's sanity right now----but I do recommend younger members of this Forum to take some note of what I'm trying to say, because it will be of enormous benefit over many years for you and your children.
Sorry to hear of your present problems , which are so common a problem on MSE posts, and hope you can grin and bear the disgraceful conveyancing antics of a profession that, generally----like bankers-----have taken on the role that used car salesmen used to have ( and still have I suppose).
Good luck , Omar and I hope all your problems get fixed very soon.

It’s gone from 6 or 7 weeks in to almost 8 weeks in the space of a few hours.... If the search company were that incompetent they wouldn’t be in business any more, last thing a solicitor needs is them holding things up and having neurotic buyers chasing them constantly so they can’t get any work done. It all sounds like it’s progressing nicely if you are only at 8 weeks. Either relax and accept the fact these things take time or pull the plug as you are clearly not cut out for moving home.
I appreciate your help and input which I wanted from this forum in the very first place. But a) Not your place to judge if am a neurotic buyer or not b) not your place to assume I amnot cut for moving home. My assumption is that these forums are public for everyone to comment and seek help from other people who have been through the process, not to be judged and definitely not be scolded becuase I sought help after some weeks of no news. Perhaps you should accept the fact that you shouldn’t be commenting on posts that triggers judgmental statements for no reason? Thanks for your input again.
Generally for some strange reason on MSE the complete incompetence shown by most professionals  throughout the buying and selling process is defended.

It's not a question of defending professionals who are slow to respond. It's just that when they ARE unresponsive, despite your best efforts, you have a choice as to whether to get stressed about it - putting pressure on your mental, emotional and physical health, and damaging your relationships - or to accept that this is part of the process, and relax about it. Neither attitude will make any difference to the outcome, but will make a considerable difference to your own mental health!
For everyone santiy and time if they simply communicated far better and give timescales to when things are likely to happen they would save themselves a lot of time answering unnecessary calls and emails.
Solicitors will contact you when they need to. They have no more control over the transaction than anybody else. There's no set timescale. Too many variables in play. Time costs money , do you want them to run up a bill to tell you nothing?

Ive been rather laid back with my solicitor from the start just allowing them to get on with what they need to. However, they hadn't updated me on a lot of things which have significantly held things up. And as a result I have had to start chasing for progress when a simple update which would take no more than 30 seconds would have solved a lot of issues. You say they dont have timescales but that is incorrect, they will have timescales to expect searches to return, they request them every day. They may not be able to move things further until a mortage offer is recieved of which your aware of roughly when that will be. If they werent to hear from an enquiry after 4 weeks im sure they would be seeking that information.

I dont expect a weekly update a nice chat and a coffee, however if they were effective communicators in the first place they would save a lot of my time and unnecessary calls to establish if they're doing the job your paying them to do.
