Dell vs HP laptop

Hi, I'm hoping there are some laptop gurus who would give an opinion / review on the pros & cons, specification and quality of a couple of laptops at Currys. Dell Inspiron 17 3793 17.3" Laptop Intel® Core™ i5-1035G1 Processor, 1 TB HDD (5400 rpm), 128 GB SSD, 8 GB DDR4 RAM (2666 MHz) , product code: 852824. Currently £729.00 (was £699.00 last week). HP 17-ca1500na 17.3" AMD Ryzen 5 3500U Processor, 1 TB HDD (5400 rpm), 256 GB SSD, 16 GB DDR4 RAM, product code: 265281. Currently £699.00. The Dell is categorised as an "All rounder" and the HP as "Everyday".

The Dell certainly has the better processor, however the AMD has more RAM and a larger SSD.
If you just want the best CPU performance, go for the Dell.  Otherwise the AMD is probably more future proof due to it having more RAM.

Depends what you are going to use it for?. Both fairly closely match but some differences:

CPU - The intel one in the Dell outperforms the HP laptop by about 26% if you care about performance:
    https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-1035G1-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-3500U/m895407vsm760067

GPU - Both have equally low performance graphics card so not much to choose:
    https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GeForce-MX230-vs-AMD-RX-Vega-8-Ryzen-iGPU/m746237vsm441833

SSD - You are getting a bit more SSD storage on the HP, better if you have lots of applications that will take up that space but the 128GB on the dell is good enough for most office / home users. You've still got 1TB on both to store photos, music and videos.

RAM: 16GB in the HP is more attractive if you use a lot of apps at the same time.

HP one is a bit lighter if portability is a priority

Connectivity - The Dell has a USB-C port - useful for more modern gadgets and docking to monitors etc. Dell has a Windows compatible hello camera - ie login with your face.

    Everything else is comparable.

If you spend a lot of time typing, probably recommend the Dell keyboard from personal experience but better to try it out in the shop if you can. If you spend time watching movies and looking at photos, check the screens out in the shop to see which you prefer, both have same spec IPS panels but one may be more pleasing to you / brighter.

Thanks to you both for the info. I've been Googleing & Yahooing it to death. I'm favouring the HP due to the larger RAM & SSD but could see the Dell has a lot more reviews which may suggest it's more popular which puzzled me due to their similarities. I thought I might be missing something about the Dell which is much better than the HP making it a better buy. You've also brought up some interesting points about the Dell that I hadn't thought of.

You can usually upgrade the ram and the drive, but the past few generations  the cpu was soldered straight onto the board and cannot be upgraded.

Hp seem to bring out new models every 2 weeks, dell not as much, and you claim the dell is more popular, so much easier to get parts for

Cheaper via their eBay portal: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DELL-Inspiron-17-3793-17-3-Laptop-Intel-Core-i5-1TB-HDD-And-128GB-SSD-Currys/133397038031 £692.55

Not that it would tempt me.

Have you looked on the Dell Outlet page to see what they have there?

There's currently the exact same spec for £520 (albeit it's categorized as Scratch & Dent) but there's another for £620 with an i7 1065G7 processor and 512GB SSD.

  • What is main use of laptop? - suspect not gaming as looking at "all-rounders".  Also 17in makes for a hefty laptop if portability is required.
Re Dell v HP, Which scores them similar for brand reliability and customer satisfaction.
  • If the OP is set on choosing between those two, and expected usage doesn't involve gaming (neither is suitable for proper gaming), then on balance I'd choose the HP due to the bigger SSD and more RAM. The real world difference between the CPUs is marginal for everyday usage.
