Gap year council tax - please help!

Hi Reader,
So I recently left school, and under the current climate, I have made the decision to take a gap year for uni- defer my entry until September 2021.
I am currently living with my mum, being supported by her. I need your advice in terms of council tax: Do I have to pay it, or am I classed as a student and are exempt?
If so, what would be my next step - to sign on? Could you tell me about what this process involves? I've never done it or worked.
Many thanks for your kind advice.
Elliot

You are not a student. You have finished secondary education so your mother would not be entitled to claim SPD, assuming that you are the only other adult in the house.
Your mother also loses child benefit assuming that she has told them that you are no longer in approved education.0 -

When exactly did you leave education ?
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
If you are over 18 and not on any official course, you are not a student and are not therefore exempt. To be on a gap year you have to have been accepted onto a university course which you have agreed to defer for a year. Is everything official?
If you're not studying and you don't have an official deferment then your household is liable for full council tax because more than one person lives there.
If you don't have any income at all, you may be eligible for some benefits - or you could look for a job? To get benefits you have to contact your local Department of Work and Pensions office. During this coronavirus crisis, I'd phone them first and ask what you need to do.
If you intend to go away for your gap year, then this is all moot, of course. Please note - taken from the Forum Rules and amended for my own personal use (with thanks) : It is up to you to investigate, check, double-check and check yet again before you make any decisions or take any action based on any information you glean from any of my posts.
