BT Email retention charge

Some considerable time ago BT informed me that if I wanted to retain my BT email address I would have to pay for the privilege. I have had it for donkeys years but no longer had their Internet Connection. I pay £7.50 a month. I now find out that a friend with a BT email and same circumstances as myself pays nothing and has never been charged anything or even been approached by BT. Anyone else in this position and have any words of wisdom to offer?

BT only charge for the premium version of their email service to those that have left BT , if you don’t want anything but a basic service ( so no email clients etc, you log in via a browser and read mail that way ) that is available for free, but in your case , downgrading as an ex customer from the premium service to a basic one may be more difficult than if you were someone leaving now, and simply requesting their email address be kept on a ‘basic’ ( free ) basis.
