Add References to new updated word

Options
Anyone know how to add references in on the updated word? I’m not a tech person and have realised that over the last few weeks but now I am about to hang the towel in and give the up!!!
Why did word have to update!

What type of reference do you mean?
Which version of Word are you using?

Even on the latest version of Word on O365, there is a references tab.
If you are using the latest version, are you sure you didn't hide the references tab? File > Options > Customised Ribbon. Make sure references is checked on the right side.

Does the University of Edinburgh not have an IT helpdesk? Or you could maybe ask Marie Mitchell, she might know.
